Surajkund Mela. A visit to explore and buy my favorite handicraft items.

I was always residing near the Surajkund area but had not received a chance to visit the Surajkund Mela extensively. Every time I planned it but due to some office hours and busy schedules, all my plans got dropped. I still remember how all my female colleagues planned to visit the mela from the office for a few hours but that never happened.

The mela has received immense popularity among all age groups of people because of its platform of displaying a vivid collection of handicrafts developed in different states of India and abroad.  The colorful atmosphere is a good choice to spend a day observing and buying some unique handcrafted items as per our personal choices and needs.

If you are an admirer of bohemian decor ideas then this mela a perfect choice to explore beautiful pieces to decor each corner of your house. You name the item and you will get it here with unique work on it. My bargaining qualities are not that good but some skills can be applied to get better deals. I did that to buy some junk jewelry.

What can be done on a day visit to the Fair?

Apart from shopping, there are a few things which are relaxing and enjoyable. Like folk music and dance performances by artists from various states of India, and also different kinds of joy rides for adults and children. Special performances by renowned artists and music bands were also part of the event.

Many food stalls were set up during the period to serve authentic Indian cuisine. Also one can venture into enjoying and buying food and craft items from different International participants displaying their traditional things. At least 20 countries participated in this year.

What can we buy from handloom stores and jewelry?

I saw almost all the states of India display their traditional handloom items. All products are fresh and of good quality. Kanchipuram silk sarees, Mysore silk sarees, Banarasi silk sarees, Assam silk mekhela chador, shawls, etc were displayed.

You will get fashionable junk jewelry collections. Beautiful neckpieces, earrings, studs, bracelets, thread work jewelry, etc were displayed at different stalls.

Another interesting thing was, I got a huge variety of jutis there to choose from. Also nice collections of jute bags.

What can we eat there?

I was amazed to enjoy a huge jalebi at the food stall available there. Many food stalls served favorite cuisines from all over India. Starting from Chole Bhature, Pani Puri, Pau Bhaji, Dahi Bhale, Aloo papri chaat, different kinds of sweets, drinks, fire pan, and chaats. Many International vendors also kept their traditional food items on display.

The mega festival is being organized every year in February. The dates are on 1-14 February.
